About me

I have been taking photographs casualy since I was a teenager but started more serious work in 1988.

I was a firefighter for many years but in 1991 I was forced to retire following a serious accident. I embarked on a two year City & Guilds course at Brunel College, Bristol. It was here that I learnt much about the technical side of photography and gained valuable darkroom experience in monochrome, colour negative and cibachrome. In 1993 I was accepted as a Licentiate of  the B.I.P.P. with a panel of portraiture in black and white.

I had a friend who ran a photographic business and he kindly let me use his studio and darkroom out of hours. Here I was able to gain valuable experience in studio portraiture and I also had use of the his excellent darkroom. I learnt much from Paul and his business partner, Steve.aph
I used my time building a portfolio of work and had the good fortune to photograph many celebrities.

I lived in Gloucestershire at that time but in 2001 moved to France, expecting to take many more images of the countryside. I did very little due to injuries sustained. I relocated to the U.K. in 2009 and am now living in Lincolnshire. I joined a local Photographic Society in September 2009 and with the help of club members and others, am learning the art of digital imaging using Photoshop and other imaging software..

My earlier images were taken on film, my chosen cameras being a Nikon F3 and F5. For medium format I used a Mamiya RZ67 . It is only in recent years that I have started to 'go digital'.  My choice of dSLRs was made for me as I had several Nikon lenses. At present I have a brace of Nikons, namely a  D70 and  a D5000. I have recently acquired a superb compact, a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ8. I carry this most of the time to get that unexpected shot. I would very much like to own a D3s because of it's sturdiness and full size sensor. However, the price rules it out at the moment. Having said that I am impressed with the quality of images I get from both my current camaras.  I learnt many years ago it is not the camera you use but the composition that matters.
